Shortening knit gloves
My daughter and I picked out her first pair of gloves, and they're a bit big but she loved the feel and color.
Feeling very clever, I decided to shorten the gloves with a running stitch that could be drawn tight (a gather). This would fit the gloves to very small hands now, and I could let out the stitches over time - resulting in years of wear from the same article!
The technique worked, but making the fabric gather evenly was difficult. Smaller stitches at the finger tip caused most of the length reduction to happen there.
Thing is, the gloves-wearer initially HATED the change. She has reconciled to them now, but I'm tempted to take out the stitches and change them to a zig-zag in order to improve how the fingertips feel.
Probably best to save that for the beginning of next cold season though... when I will be checking the fit anyway.
